Beginnings and Recent Projects

Hello everyone! I decided to start a new blog today because I was not a huge fan of the name of my old blog and I have also done some thinking on where I want to aim my future at. If you have not read anything about me previous to this post, I encourage you to visit my profile to learn a bit more about me! I will be going into my sophomore year of college in a week exactly and I decided to start blogging last year so that I could work on my writing as well as getting my ideas and concepts out into the world. My previous blog was mainly focused on the game Landmark and my creations in it, but this blog is going to be more for my concept art work. I just started working on concept art this summer and have been learning photoshop and my new graphics tablet pretty much every day. I have made myself a schedule where I read and study other artists from 9:00pm-9:30pm and then from 9:30pm on I draw. I decided to do this because I saw an article written by Noah Bradley that really inspired me. I'll drop a link to the article at the end of this post for any of you who want to read further on him, but his article is about his beginnings as an artist and how he came to be so successful as a freelance artist. Because of this article, I have gained a massive influx of drive and determination that I will use to keep to my schedule regardless of my college plans.

Now to get to the main point of this blog: sharing my artwork. I am going to show everything that I have created so far this summer starting with my very first piece. Now I want to be an environment concept artist so all of these are environment pieces. So without further ado, here is the first piece that I created!

If you have seen my other blog, then this piece is probably familiar to you. This is literally my first creation, but I cannot claim the picture concept as my own. My goal for this was to recreate a finished idea by a simple concept art piece that I found on google. This is what I looked off of:

Obviously my piece falls flat (literally two dimensional), but I loved it. I loved the process of creating it and no matter how badly it compared to the professional piece I found joy with it. I will say this was much harder to create because I did not have my graphics tablet at the time and it was so hard for me to draw on my laptop/tablet in GIMP using only opacity and a sketchy pen.

Moving on to my second creation. This piece truly is my least favorite because of how fuzzy it is. I have it named as Mountain Pond, but I have come to see it as the Blind Man's Pond.

For this piece I decided to experiment with brushes and see what I could create with only one brush. And the brush I chose was a very fuzzy looking brush. Hopefully now you can see why the Blind Man's Pond is the name I call it.

My third creation is a huge step up for me. This piece I love because it shows my progress. I also had just gotten my graphics tablet and subscribed to photoshop so I could really get behind it and see what I could create.

For this piece I really wanted to make a believable environment. I am going to try out for the G.I.R.L. Scholarship again this year now that I have previous winner's artwork to get an example from and have the tools to actually create something that can stand up even a little to the competition. This piece I wanted to be the start of my creation for said competition. The only drawback is the scale that I made with. It's much boxier than I wish it was, but that's alright. I will just recreate it and make it bigger and better!

This next piece was a really fast speedpaint. I spent maybe an hour on it? Hour and a half possibly?

I really did not spend a ton of time on this. All I wanted to do was make something that looked like it was happening at sunset. Which I think I accomplished.

My fifth piece was an idea that I came up with when I couldn't sleep. My mind was just racing and so I got out of bed, wrote my idea down, and then my mind was at piece that I wouldn't forget it.

Personally, I really like this. It's a really unique concept in my opinion. I had seen other people making mushroom themed environments, but they were all in forests with small mushroom houses and they were wonderful looking but for me I instantly thought "why not have giant mushroom "tree"houses?" And so multiple hours later I made this piece. I think I'm going to consider this for the G.I.R.L. Scholarship as well. Do some touching up to it and make a creature to live in these mushroom houses.

This next piece I actually started in one direction, but really disliked how it was turning out so I changed it quite a bit to something that I really like. I'll show the first concept of it so you can see the difference that I am talking about.

As you can see the mood is totally different in both pictures. I think that the idea I had for the first piece was decent in nature, but my skills in oriental building design is not there yet. So I changed it from being called "The Lone Lookout" to "Hope Restored." I view the bottom image as someone who has lost their way at night. Everything is creepy and sinister, but cresting a hill he/she sees salvation in a distant village.

This final picture is something I finished this morning. I took the time this time to start out with a simple sketch to get my ideas down.

My idea was to have a lone person praising to the heavens at a beautiful sight of God's fingers (what many Christians call the rays of light that come through clouds). This is the sketch that I came up with. The two side rocks were going to be areas for other monk like worshipers to kneel as well.

I then went in and fleshed out the background and midground to get a good idea of how I wanted the foreground to be. I decided to remove the side rocks completely to focus on a sole worshiper. Obviously I spent no time whatsoever changing said worshiper.

This morning I put some finishing touches on the foreground and really shaped out the worshiper. He is obviously very changed. I decided that I didn't want the worshiper to be classified as a monk, rather I wanted it to be a scene one might come across randomly. I like how this turned out and I really like having the different stages pictures because it shows me how much I've changed and how much else needs changing.

I hope you have enjoyed reading through this post and I hope you will come back to see my new posts! I plan to be realistic with this blog in terms of scheduling when I'm going to be posting. Having a set schedule is wonderful for say a twitch streamer, but for a blogger I find it unneccesary. I will post when I feel I have enough to share with the world. Most likely that will end up being once a week, but who knows with me starting college in a week. Let's just adventure through it together and see where it takes us! Once again thank you for making it this far! If you'd like to follow me on Twitter you can look me up via my name or my handle is @FallenRapture. I'll also be working on getting this blog to have all of my contact information, website, and background. Have wonderful days and I will talk to you later!
